Tips to Maintain Good Oral Health

Good oral health is essential not only for good overall health but also for attractive smiles. A healthy mouth goes a long way toward promoting overall health and wellness. Patients can eat and speak with confidence when they have a healthy smile. Listed below are some tips that will help you maintain good oral health:

Brushing and Flossing

To keep your teeth healthy and strong, you need to brush and floss regularly. We recommend brushing at least twice a day, especially right before bed. Consistency is the key to maintaining good oral health. It helps to prevent plaque buildup that leads to cavities. In addition to regular brushing, flossing once a day is also important. The best times to floss are after meals and before you go to bed. This helps to remove food particles and other debris from between teeth that a regular toothbrush can’t remove. This will also help prevent cavities from developing while also preserving the health of the gums and supporting bone structure in the mouth.

Regular Dental Hygiene Visits

To keep your teeth and gums healthy, you should visit our practice for regular cleanings and exams. Our dentist will remove plaque buildup and polish your teeth, making them look bright and shiny. They will also assess your bite to make sure your teeth are meeting properly and not causing unnecessary wear or damage.

Diet and Oral Health

A healthy diet is important for good overall health, including oral health. The foods and drinks you consume can contribute to your dental health – some foods and beverages are harmful, while others can promote better oral health. Consume a balanced diet that includes protein, calcium, vitamin D, and other vitamins and minerals. Some other foods to avoid include sugary foods such as cookies, candy, cakes, ice cream, and soda. Foods high in acid can erode tooth enamel. Acidic foods include citrus fruits, fruit juices, wine, tomatoes, pickles, soy, and vinegar. If you consume acidic foods or beverages, you can neutralize the acidity by drinking water.

Your dentist may recommend avoiding certain products that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, tomato sauce, curry, and more.

Quit Smoking

In addition to eating healthy, avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. Both tobacco use and alcohol may lead to oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss.
