October is National Dental Hygiene Month

Since 1981, the American Dental Association has celebrated National Dental Hygiene Month in October as a way to promote the importance of dental hygienists providing oral health care. This month-long celebration includes events and promotions held throughout the weeks and culminates in the celebration of “Dental Hygienists Recognition Week” on the third week of the month. The events are meant to bring awareness to the education of oral health and the importance of good oral hygiene habits.

Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

Good dental hygiene is essential to a healthy smile because your overall health is directly linked to your oral health. To keep your smile healthy, you need to take care of your teeth daily by brushing and flossing, visiting the dentist regularly for cleanings and exams, and eating a healthy diet. Without good oral hygiene, harmful plaque and food particles can accumulate in your mouth and lead to a variety of oral health issues, including tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Maintaining your oral health can help to prevent these issues and keep your mouth in tip-top condition.

When Should You See Your Dentist For a Checkup?

People should see their dentists regularly for checkups and preventive care. These visits are important to help patients maintain good oral health. For adults, these appointments usually occur every three to six months, depending on their current oral health. Children should receive their first appointment around the age of one or within six months of when their teeth first start to come in. Seniors may need to come in more often due to increased risks of tooth decay, gum disease, and other issues that affect the mouth. A dentist can provide a custom schedule for every patient based on their specific dental needs.

During these appointments, patients can get routine cleanings to remove debris from their teeth and gums. The hygienist may also provide tips on brushing and flossing more effectively at home.

During a dental visit, a dentist will examine the patient’s teeth to check for any areas of concern, such as cavities, infections, or signs of oral cancer. If an issue is found, the treatment plan can be started as soon as possible to ensure it is addressed before it becomes more serious.

Good Oral Hygiene is Essential to Overall Health

Did you know that dental health issues can actually contribute to other health issues as well? For example, if left untreated, tooth decay can spread to the nerve of the tooth and cause pain when eating hot or cold foods. If a tooth becomes infected and begins to die as a result of these issues, an abscess may form in the gum line. In severe cases, the infection can spread throughout the body and lead to dangerous conditions like sepsis.
